MT. CORINTH BAPTIST CHURCH - Hempstead
The origin of the Mt. Corinth Baptist church is unknown. Church was held by Methodists and Baptists on alternate Sundays in the same house. It was located about where Mrs. Etta Williams residence now stands. The first organization of the church was under Rev. I. S. Campbell, who conducted services once a month about 1885. The first building was on a site later occupied by Hauck's Garage. In 1891, under the pastorate of Rev. F. L. Lights and trustees L. J. Starks, H. l. Davis, and G. W. Wyatt, a new church was erected. The 1900 storm demolished it, and a new church was built that year. In 1915, the need for a fourth church structure became almost a necessity when a tornado struck Hempstead. Repairs and remodeling occurred during the 1920's and 1940's - some times services were held in the public school. The present building, on the SE corner of Austin and 7th Street, was built in 1959 and since remodeled .
