Waller County Buildings and Areas
Hempstead Community Center
Rock building build by WPA. C.R. Chamberland was the foreman of this project which was visited by Eleanor Roosevelt during its construction. A newspaper article during the time of her visit indicated that she ate crackers & cheese on the corner by Winfree's Grocery store ( Doug Holleman's building) & visited with local citizens. The building was used for birthday parties, wedding receptions, showers, scout meetings, elections etc, and the Church of Christ met there before building their first building. High School students had a Youth Club there during the summer and during football season, after game dances were held there. The Waller County Library was located in south or right hand room. The kitchen was on the north or left hand side. There was a fireplace in the large middle room.
